Science Study Notes
• The Periodic Table organizes and classifies elements
• Greek and Latin are languages the names of elements come from
• There are 118 known elements in the earth
• The combination of the symbols is called a formula

7 elements in the earth and air
Aluminum
Calcium
Iron
Oxygen
Potassium
Silicon
Sodium
Compounds - matter formed by two or more elements joined by a chemical reaction
Compounds can be represented by the combination of two or more symbols.
Water is a common compound. H2 + 0 = H20
The smallest particle of a compound is a molecule.
Mixture – two or more elements or compound, or both, that have combined without a chemical reaction.
Identify
SiO2 = sand
H2SO4 = Sulfuric Acid
NH3 ammonia
C12H22O11 -sugar
Fe2O3 - iron oxide (rust)
NaCl salt

The first 7 elements in the periodic table
1. Hydrogen
2. Helium
3. Lithium
4. Beryllium
5. Boron
6. Carbon
7. Nitrogen
Metals are shiny, they are good conductors of heat and electricity, and can be bent or hammered into many shapes so they are called malleable. Gold, silver, and iron are some examples
Non metals are dull, poor conductors, and brittle. Sulphur and carbon are two examples.
Metalloids have some characteristics of both metals and non-metals. Some metalloids are shiny and many of them are conductors; however compared to metals, they are poor conductors. Silicon, arsenic are 2 examples of metalloids.
Marie and Pierre Curie discovered of Polonium (84) and Radium (88)
